Missions & Outreach
Through various programs and activities, the Afrocentric Ministry embraces and celebrates the historical contributions of people of African descent. By reminding us of our past struggles and triumphs, we are encouraged to move forward and create for future generations. the Afrocentric Ministry coordinates culturally inspired programs and events including annual Kwanzaa observation, Black History Month Observance, and the annual Afrocentric Sunday. Bethel-Bishop-Chappelle (BBC) Apartments offers low to moderate income one, two, three and four Bedrooms apartment homes. Bethel partners with the congregations of Bishops Memorial A.M.E. Church and Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church to minister to the needs of this community through on-sight outreach and assistance programs. Christian Social Action
The gospel of Jesus Christ is a gospel of hope and healing that transcends the social, cultural, and political power structures that leave people poor, imprisoned, physically suffering and oppressed. Committed to addressing the needs of the suffering and not spoken for, the Christian Social Action Commission was formed to spread God’s love for all people regardless of color, creed, beliefs or status through social and political action. Clothes & Shoes Closet
Established by the Women’s Missionary Society of Bethel, The Clothes & Shoes Closet was created to reach those in need of clothing and shoes in the community. The closet is open to the general public on weekends bi-weekly. Donations can be left with the Receptionist at any time. Laws may have taken prayer out of schools, but this ministry takes prayer and assistance right back in! Through partnership with administrators, teachers, parents, and students, the School Adoption Ministry works to connect with local schools and provide resources for children's success in and out of the classroom. Women's Missionary Society (W.M.S.)
Established in 1866 to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of people in our local communities and around the globe, the Women’s Missionary Society (W.M.S.), is a connectional church service through the African Methodist Episcopal Church. At Bethel, the W.M.S. provides leadership as the primary outreach ministry to the needy. Providing oversight to the Clothes & Shoes Closet, the Food Pantry, Benevolence Assistance (Sick and Shut-in), and support to bereaved families this organization is one of the most active in our congregation. Through partnerships community organizations such as the Cooperative Ministries, Inc., The Columbia Urban League, The N.A.A.C.P., the Tucker Center Nursing Home and Adopt-A-Family programs, the impact of the W.M.S. is truly felt throughout the city and the world.
